In the last 8 years, Ștefan Tuchilă climbed over 80 buildings and took several thousand photographs of Bucharest: another kind of urban research, a methodical and spectacular urban mapping. And a support for the recollection of a city that is constantly reinventing itself.
Trying a purely technical classification, the project is divided into two parts: panoramic images of 180/360 ° and detailed images, photographs taken in order to capture certain relationships, objects or special circumstances. The two components complement one another in order to render the most accurate description possible of the urban fabric, allowing both a comprehensive, general image, as well as a narrow frameing, the photographic equivalent of a critical remark.

Timp de 8 ani, Ştefan Tuchilă s-a urcat pe 80 de clădiri şi a făcut câteva mii de fotografii cu Bucureştiul: un proiect de cercetare urbană, o cartare urbană metodică şi spectaculoasă. Şi un suport pentru memoria unui oraş care se reînfiinţează permanent.
Încercând o clasificare pur tehnică, proiectul este împărţit în două părţi: imagini panoramice la 180/360° şi imagini de detaliu, fotografii realizate pentru a captura anumite relaţii, obiecte sau situaţii deosebite. Cele două componente se completează în descrierea cât mai fidelă a ţesutului urban, permiţând atât o imagine amplă, generală, dar şi un cadru strâns, echivalentul fotografic al unui comentariu critic.

Old houses anew, design and something more /exhibition
An exhibition about the reactivation of the Romanian architectural heritage
24 September – 17 October 2012, Assembly Hall of Carol I University Central Library of Bucharest.
This exhibition was based on a selection of 20 contemporary interventions to listed buildings. We have not chosen restorations of huge value monuments (where the interventions should be invisible anyway), but operations that breathed new life into old, fragile sites. Respectful repairs, but also infusions of new functions, strategies, community actions, added value for that particular location. Beyond the beautiful image, each of these projects has its own story : obviously, the story of the respective location, but also the one about a regeneration process. The restorations in case sometimes take dozens years and involve minimum funds and continuous volunteer work (like in the case of Mincu House - OAR headquarters); other time they involved very popular interior design projects which are however based on a certain perspective on history; art centers, museums, houses, auditoriums; invisible interventions or, on the contrary, bearing the clear mark of a contemporary insertion. So, we knew from the start that we would have to present not only very different works, but also layers of the same work.
Moreover, the exhibition was to be organized in the lobby of the Assembly Hall of Carol I University Central Library of Bucharest: a place full of decorations, strong colors, many materials, different textures. We chose to come up with an exhibition with invisible images. Or rather images that could not be seen from the start. We thought about letting people discover them. Instead of printed panels we chose mobile windows. Each visitor can change the position of the windows so that every time another space and detail will be depicted from the interior of the lobby. The screens display former images of the houses, images of the construction site or of projects by the same authors. Some of the photos associated with these projects, usually those that show the final result are printed. They can be taken out of the box and looked at as closely as you want. We wanted to bring forth some of the rich tactile experience connected to most of the exhibited projects.

Re-activarea patrimoniului arhitectural din România
24 septembrie – 17 octombrie 2012, foaierul Aulei Bibliotecii Centrale Universitare „Carol I” din București.
O expoziţie pornind de la o selecţie de 20 de intervenţii contemporane în cadrul unor clădiri de patrimoniu. Nu au fost alese restaurări ale unor monumente cu valoare uriaşă (în care intervenţiile nici nu ar trebui să se vadă), ci operaţiuni care au dat o viaţă nouă unor locuri bătrâne şi fragile. Reparaţii respectuoase, dar şi injecţii de funcţiuni noi, strategii, acţiuni comunitare, valori adăugate pentru un loc. Dincolo de imagini frumoase, fiecare dintre aceste proiecte avea de spus propria poveste: evident, povestea locului respectiv, dar şi a unui proces de regenerare. E vorba uneori despre restaurări întinse pe zeci de ani, cu fonduri minime şi voluntariat continuu (ca în cazul Casei Mincu – sediul OAR); alteori, despre amenajări foarte populare, însă care provin dintr-o anumită privire asupra istoriei; centre de artă, muzee, locuinţe, săli de spectacole; intervenţii invizibile sau, dimpotrivă, marcări clare ale inserţiei contemporane.
Pentru că evenimentul era găzduit de un loc foarte decorat, colorat, cu materiale și texturi diferite, am ales să facem o expoziţie în care imaginile să fie ascunse, pentru ca oamenii să le descopere - în locul panourilor printate fiind instalate nişte ferestre mobile. Fiecare vizitator le putea schimba poziţia, decupând de fiecare dată alt spaţiu şi alt detaliu din interiorul holului. Pe ecrane defilau imagini cu stări anterioare ale caselor, din timpul şantierului sau din proiecte de aceiaşi autori, iar fotografiile printate arătau, de regulă, rezultatul final al acelor proiecte. Acestea puteau fi scoate din cutie şi privite de-aproape – recuperând astfel ceva din experienţa tactilă bogată pe care le stârnesc mai toate proiectele prezentate. Şi am adus mai aproape de toţi scotocitul printre lucruri vechi.

[EN] The project proposed a study of the recent independent initiatives in Romania and a selection of 14 projects which may be seen as effective models of action and restoration – of abandoned spaces, of the identity of a place, of good techniques and habits, of the relationship with the world, promoting thus a culture of the urban civic activism. Interventions in the public spaces with the participation of the local community, conversions and restored places or constructions out of use, urban cultural re-activations through architectural, art or urban design were highlighted. At the same time, personal strategies and viable models for the social integration and the accountability of certain groups, setting up communities or partnerships formulae were identified. The project brought together the energies, experiences, feelings, questions and perspectives of people who understood that the fate of the place they live in depends on them. The exhibition had over 2,500 visitors, out of which 400 were present at the opening.

[RO] Activări Urbane în România
Proiectul a propus un studiu al iniţiativelor independente recente din România şi o selecţie de 14 proiecte ce pot fi considerate modele eficiente de acţiune şi recuperare – a unor spaţii abandonate, a identităţii unui loc, a unor tehnici şi obiceiuri bune, a relaţiilor cu lumea, promovând astfel o cultură a activismului civic urban. Au fost puse în lumină intervenţii în spaţii publice cu implicarea comunităţii locale, conversii şi recuperări de locuri sau construcţii ieşite din uz, re–activări culturale urbane prin mijloace arhitecturale, artistice sau design urban. Totodată, au fost relevate strategii personale şi metode viabile privind integrarea socială şi responsabilizarea unor grupuri, crearea de comunităţi sau formule de parteneriat. Proiectul a adus împreună energiile, experienţele, trăirile, întrebările şi perspectivele unor oameni care au înţeles că de ei depinde soarta locului în care trăiesc. Expoziţia a avut peste 2500 de vizitatori, dintre care 400 prezenţi la deschidere.

Selected examples in architecture, interior design, urban planning and landscaping highlighted the way in which they approach a new and foreign environment, change and redefine already existing buildings and build new ones in extraordinary conditions: sensitive solutions to current challenges, always considering the future, the sustainabilit and the new technologies. Contrary to the global media interest for spectaculary and the culture of celebrity, the exhibition presented innovative projects which offer a confident pragmatic and discreet approach, focusing on the place they were designed for.

Expoziţia a prezentat 14 proiecte realizate de tineri arhitecţi din Germania şi care au fost încheiate în străinătate, majoritatea după 2004. Exemplele selectate de arhitectură, design interior, urbanism şi peisagistică evidenţiau modul în care aceştia abordează un mediu nou şi străin, modifică şi redefinesc clădirile deja existente şi construiesc altele noi în condiţii ieşite din comun: soluţii sensibile la provocările actuale, având mereu în vedere viitorul, durabilitatea şi noile tehnologii. Contrar interesului mediatic global pentru spectaculos şi cultura celebrităţii, expoziţia a prezentat proiecte inovatoare care oferă o abordare pragmatică încrezătoare şi discretă, concentrându-se asupra locului pentru care au fost gândite.

[EN] The exhibition presents the impact of the economic, environmental and generation crisis over architecture and the way to approach the complexity of those issues to set up a future outline. “Rien ne va Plus” started as a research project with the starting point that we are the witnesses of a triple crisis: an economic one, connected to the estate speculations, another one, the environmental one, connected to unprecedented climatic changes and, finally, that of generations. The exhibition compiled texts, images and data on those, with no clear distinction – which texts are part of which crisis. The phrase “Rien ne va Plus” comes from the roulette. It literally stands for the moment when all bets are made, the moment of suspense between the results. Literally, “Rien ne va Plus” is the moment when everything stops.

[RO] Expoziţia înfăţişează impactul crizei economice, ecologice şi generaţionale asupra arhitecturii şi modul de abordare a compexităţii acestor probleme pentru a crea o schiţă de viitor. „Rien ne va Plus” a început ca un proiect de cercetare având ca punct de plecare afirmaţia că suntem martorii unei triple crize: una economică, legată de specula imobiliară, una de mediu, legată de schimbări climatice fără precedent şi, în fine, una a generaţiilor. În cadrul expoziţiei au fost compilate texte, imagini şi date despre acestea, fără a face o distincţie clară – care texte corespund fiecărei crize. Termenul „Rien ne va Plus” provine de la ruleta de joc. Se referă la momentul în care toate pariurile s-au făcut, momentul de suspans înaintea rezultatului. Literal, „Rien ne va Plus” e momentul în care totul stagnează.

[EN] The explosion of good quality architecture is the result not only of the local circumstances, but also of a certain historical continuity. The exhibition focused on the most productive eras in the modern and contemporary history, presenting a selection of exemplary works. The first matches the ‘30s, after winning the independence. The architecture of the ’50s and the ‘60s reflect the special case of Yugoslavia in the socialist block. The lack of Stalinism and the determined opening to the West, especially for the republics in the West of the federation, welcome a modern architecture able to meet the Dalmatic background, and generally the Mediterranean one. The new trends after the Balkan wars reflect the reintegration in the European cultural space and the social changes and, simultaneously, the searches for a critical regionalism.

[RO] expoziţie itinerantă adusă în România şi conferinţă de arhitectură contemporană croată
Explozia de arhitectură de bună calitate nu se datorează doar condiţiilor actuale, ci şi unei continuităţi istorice. Expoziţia s-a concentrat asupra celor mai productive perioade din istoria modernă şi contemporană, prezentând o selecţie de lucrări exemplare. Prima corespunde anilor ’30, de după câştigarea independenţei. Arhitectura anilor ’50 şi ’60 reflectă situaţia specială a Iugoslaviei în lagărul socialist. Lipsa stalinismului şi deschiderea accentuată spre Occident, mai ales în cadrul republicilor din vestul federaţiei au favorizat o arhitectură modernă care a răspuns contextului dalmat şi general mediteranean. Noile orientări de după războaiele balcanice reflectă reintegrarea în spaţiul cultural european şi transformările sociale şi, în acelaşi timp, căutările în sensul unui regionalism critic.

[EN] The exhibition aimed to make known the works of an exceptional architect, but far too little known. Rudolf Fränkel was born and worked early in Germany. In 1933, following the Nazi, he emigrated and settled in Bucharest, from where he emigrated again to England in 1937. After the war, he finally settled in the United States. The exhibition had three sections: the first, dedicated to Fränkel’s works in general, with parallels between his activity in Germany and that in Romania. The main section covered the most important work in Berlin, the Atlantic garden-quarter, as well as its restoration by bfstudio-Architekten office – a model of urban revitalization and resurrection of a metropolitan spirit. A vital model for a city such as Bucharest, whose exceptional modernist heritage, fully ignored by the society and cultural elites, is to be irreparably damaged. The third illustrated the progress of Fränkel’s works in the last 70 years. The photographic reading of Iosif Kiralyi goes beyond the documentary aim, reforming the greatness and the decline of the modernist dream in Bucharest.

[RO] Expoziţia şi-a propus popularizarea operei unui arhitect excepţional, însă mult prea puţin cunoscut. Rudolf Fränkel s-a născut şi a lucrat în prima parte a vieţii în Germania. În 1933, după instaurarea nazismului, a emigrat şi s-a stabilit la Bucureşti, de unde a emigrat iar în 1937 spre Anglia. După război s-a stabilit definitiv în Statele Unite. Expoziţia a avut trei secţiuni: prima, dedicată în general operei lui Fraenkel, stabilea paralele între activitatea din Germania şi cea din România. Secţiunea centrală conţinea cea mai importantă lucrare din Berlin, cartierul-grădină Atlantic, precum şi restaurarea sa de către biroul bfstudio-Architekten - un model de revitalizare urbană şi de reînviere a unui spirit metropolitan. Model esenţial pentru un oraş ca Bucureştiul, al cărui excepţional patrimoniu modernist, complet ignorat de societate şi de elitele culturale, se află pe cale de deteriorare iremediabilă. A treia secţiune ilustra evoluţia operelor lui Fränkel în ultimii 70 de ani. Lectura fotografică a artistului Iosif Kiralyi depăşeşte scopul documentar, transfigurând măreţia şi declinul visului modernist în Bucureşti.

[EN] The exhibition promoted 16 alternative projects to improve public spaces in Bucharest. Small ideas, costwise, which could truly improve the quality of life for communities and certain urban situations. Designed by the members of the organization and by young invited architects, the proposals submitted to authorities and the wide audience addressed various places, from abandoned sites to the great housing neighbourhoods, and spaces in the heart of the historical centre. The key requirement was the denial of the utopia and the invention of solutions with a very low budget, which could soon applied and turn into model-interventions: no wast, excessive demolitions and grand constructions, but with a well defined target, we can make the life in our cities bearable. Part of those projects went, meanwhile, into more advanced stages. The project aimed to support a slow administration, promote professionals, theoretical models and fast working strategies.

[RO] Idei mici pentru un oraş mare
Expoziţia a promovat 16 proiecte alternative pentru îmbunătăţirea spaţiilor publice din Bucureşti. Idei mici, în privinţa costurilor, care ar putea ameliora semnificativ calitatea vieţii unor comunităţi şi anumite situaţii urbane. Elaborate de membrii organizaţiei şi tineri arhitecţi invitaţi, propunerile adresate autorităţilor şi publicului larg vizau locuri diverse, de la terenuri abandonate în marile cartiere de blocuri, la spaţii din inima centrului istoric. Cerinţa esenţială a fost refuzul utopiei şi inventarea unor soluţii cu buget foarte redus, care să poată fi puse rapid în practică şi să capete valoare de operaţii-model: fără risipă, demolări excesive şi construcţii de mare amploare, dar cu o ţintă bine precizată, putem face viaţa oraşelor noastre suportabilă. O parte dintre aceste proiecte au intrat între timp în faze mai avansate. Proiectul şi-a propus să ofere suport unui sistem administrativ lent, să promoveze profesionişti, modele teoretice şi strategii de lucru rapide.

[RO] O excursie în istoria arhitecturii contemporane, povestind despre condiţia arhitectului modern în calitatea lui de turist / observator al lumii, încercând o privire mai puţin interesată de seducţia suprafeţelor şi mai mult aplecată spre descifrarea aspectelor ascunse ale locurilor şi obiectelor. O viziune fotografică despre realităţi arhitecturale evoluate şi în acelaşi timp povestea unor arhitecţi în căutarea unei viziuni consistente asupra realului.

[EN] The Hyperlocked installation was designed to function as a support to introduce the Hiperbolism in circulation, which could define an architectural trend at the end of the 20th century and featuring an exhaustive use of succession of spherical and hyperbolical surfaces. Following a prolonged modernism and decorative and historicist post-modern exaggerations, the purely geometrical, Neo-Euclidian, reaction, seems to have smoothened its path for success with the audience and the critics, though the stakes are only visual, with no inherent functionality. The succession of spherical and hyperbolical surfaces on an architectural volume is exclusively the result of digital modelling, such designs have no organic connotation, de names of “biomorphism” or “new organic trend” being, therefore, inappropriate. The installation presented as a first premiere the material prototype of interwoven hyperbolic fabrics, in which the asymptotic lines of the inner fabric are determined by the positioning in the discreet network of the exterior one. Such an image has not been created, as a three-dimension, before, being possible only virtually, on the screen of a monitor.

[RO] Instalaţia Hyperlocked a fost creată pentru a servi drept suport pentru introducerea în circulaţie a termenului de Hiperbolism, care ar putea defini o tendinţă arhitecturală apărută la finele secolului XX şi caracterizată de folosirea exhaustivă a succesiunilor de suprafeţe sferice şi hiperbolice. După un modernism mult lungit şi după exagerările postmoderne ornamentale şi istoriciste, reacţia pur geometrică, neeuclidiană, pare să-şi fi netezit calea pentru succes la public şi critică, deşi miza e doar vizuală, fără funcţionalitate intrinsecă. Succesiunea de suprafeţe sferice şi hiperbolice pe un volum arhitectural este exclusiv rezultatul modelării digitale, astfel de creaţii nu mai au nicio conotaţie organică, denumirile de „biomorfism“ sau „noul curent organic“ fiind, aşadar, improprii. Instalaţia a prezentat în premieră absolută prototipul material al unor pânze hiperbolice întreţesute, în care liniile asimptotice ale pânzei interioare sunt determinate de poziţionarea în reţeaua discretă a pânzei exterioare. O astfel de imagine nu mai fusese, anterior, creată tridimensional, fiind posibilă până acum doar virtual, pe ecranul monitorului.

Apparently, our capital is a colage of fragments, a place of colission of architectures and identities; actually, an incredible laboratory of modernity. There is no stand of the trends of the last two centuries which could not be identified there, where a Balcan original background coabitates, an original interpretation of metropolitan models of the 19th century, an European heritage of interwar modern architecture, the grateast totalitarian operation in Europe and, finally, a frenetic and fragmented development following the collapse of dictatorship. The Jukebox City title takes over the metaphor of a juke-box – hits from various times apparently in disorder, but with themes and genres structuring discreetly the general collection. The exhibition, organized in 5 sections, was designed as a system of objects and installations set up freely in various spacs, the visitor being stimulated to discover and interact with the city and the works of architecture. For instance, in the first section – the Layers of the City – the movement of a toy car along the plan moved a projection on the wall – a colage of pictures on the real route: a digital walk on a route where old churches, buildings of a fin de siecle, interwar modernism or the ‘60s and gigantic ceausist interventions mix together.

[RO] O expoziţie cu arhitectura Bucureştiului prezentată în Barcelona. Aparent, capitala noastră e un colaj de fragmente, un loc al coliziunilor de arhitecturi şi identităţi; în fapt, un incredibil laborator al modernităţii. Nu există ipostază a evoluţiilor ultimelor două secole care să nu se regăsească aici, unde coabitează un fond originar balcanic, interpretarea originală a modelelor metropolitane de secol XIX, patrimoniu european de arhitectură modernistă interbelică, cea mai mare operaţie totalitară realizată în Europa şi, în fine, dezvoltarea frenetică şi fragmentară ce a urmat prăbuşirii dictaturii. Titlul de Jukebox City preia metafora tonomatului – hituri din diferite epoci aşezate aparent în dezordine, dar cu teme şi genuri ce structurează discret colecţia generală. Expoziţia, structurată în 5 secţiuni, a fost gândită ca un sistem de obiecte şi instalaţii aşezate liber în diferite spaţii, vizitatorul fiind stimulat să descopere şi să interacţioneze cu oraşul şi cu operele de arhitectură. De exemplu, în prima secţiune - Straturile Oraşului, mişcarea unei maşinuţe de jucărie de-a lungul planului deplasa o proiecţie pe perete – un colaj de poze de pe traseul real: o plimbare virtuală pe un traseu pe care se juxtapun biserici vechi, clădiri de sfârşit de secol, modernism interbelic sau de anii ’60 şi giganticele intervenţii ceauşiste.

[EN] The interactive project representing Romania at the 10th edition of the Venice Biennale in 2006, where it had 50,000 visitors and 3,500 active participants, was presented in 2007 to the Basel audience (in November, at the Swiss Museum of Architecture, under a great festival dedicated to Romania, Culturescapes) and in Bucharest (June 2007, Dalles Hall). Basically, a model of a sociological, urban planning and architecture study designed as a game, meant to shape active participation, the decision in the development trends, a call for reactions, opinions and solutions, presenting the issue of cohabitation, the confrontation of ideas, sorting out wishes and personal visions about the city and urbanity. Which talks about the good and the social interest.

Remix! Romanian Pavilion at Venice Biennale 2006
[EN] Starting from the fragmentary character of the Romanian reality, the exhibition presented nine basic types: energies and potentials, public space, housing models (dream house), social segregation (gentrification as opposed to extreme poverty), environmental issues, monuments and heritage, the city, the village and, finally, the planning. Alternative approaches were also presented – democratic urban planning, responsible architecture, social projects – which try to balance global trends. The types, turned into symbolic questions, were then marked of large cubes: two sides had a question; the other 4 were reply alternatives. The player placed each cube on a platform, with the side having the preferred answer up. Each side included a hidden identification card, read by an electronic device which sent it to a computer. This analyzed the replies and displayed them on a screen, followed by a real image from Romania, representative for that choice. The player discovered that way what type of development was selected, how modern or conservative, liberal or environmental-friendly, individualist or community-based will be the Romania he/she remixed. Finally, the whole set of that individual games built the image of a common project and showed the main areas of misbalance, mostly needing negotiation and community commitment.

[RO] Pornind de la caracterul fragmentar al realităţii româneşti, expoziţia prezenta nouă categorii fundamentale: energii şi potenţiale, spaţiul public, modele de locuit (casa de vis), segregarea socială (gentrificarea opusă sărăciei extreme), problemele ecologice, monumentele şi patrimoniul, oraşul, satul şi, în final, planificarea. Erau prezentate şi abordări alternative – urbanism democratic, arhitectură responsabilă, proiecte sociale – ce încearcă să echilibrezele tendinţele globale. Categoriile, transformate în întrebări simbolice, au luat forma unor cuburi mari: pe două feţe opuse era scrisă o întrebare, pe celelalte 4 feţe erau variante de răspuns. Jucătorul amplasa fiecare cub pe o platformă, având partea cu răspunsul preferat orientată în sus. Fiecare faţă conţinea o plăcuţă de identificare ascunsă, citită de un sistem electronic care-o transmitea unui computer. Acesta interpreta răspunsurile şi le afişa pe un ecran, urmate de o imagine reală din România, reprezentativă pentru alegerea respectivă. Jucătorul afla astfel ce fel de dezvoltare a ales, cât de modernă sau conservatoare, liberală sau ecologistă, individualistă sau comunitară va fi România pe care a remixat-o. În final, suma acestor jocuri individuale construia imaginea unui proiect comun şi ilustra principalele zone de dezechilibru, care au cel mai mult nevoie de negociere şi de implicarea comunităţii.

[EN] Sensai, the word providing the title of the exhibition, a typical Japanese concept which could be translated as beauty, delicacy, subtlety, sophistication. It means human touch, delicate approach, craftsmanship and is, in a way, opposed to technology and industrial elements. The perspective is focused on the object of architecture as detailed, on the appropriate combination of materials, each one selected for its effect, on the setting and the emotions. Total balance and total appropriateness. A very simple and clean image, behind which sophisticated techniques hide, an immense care for the tiniest detail and, of course, a lot of planning. The Sensai character consists of appropriate answers, balance and poetry, the beauty of the empty space and the economy of language. About all those, and the way in which an extremely modern and valuable architecture can be produced, on the background of a discreet and summarized tradition was about the projects of the 10 participating architects: Taro Ashihara, Yasushi Horibe, Kazuo Iwamura, Chitoshi Kitara, Hiroshi Naito, Akira Sakamoto, Eizo Shiina, Yoshiji Takehara, Akira Watanabe and Ken Yokogawa.

Înseamnă atingere umană, apropiere delicată, meşteşug, şi e într-un fel opusul tehnologiei şi elementelor industriale. Perspectiva se concentrează asupra obiectului de arhitectură în detalii, asupra combinării adecvate de materiale, fiecare atent selectat pentru efectul lui, asupra atmosferei şi a emoţiilor. Echilibru total şi adecvare totală. O imagine foarte simplă şi curată, în spatele căreia se ascund tehnici sofisticate, o grijă enormă pentru cel mai insignifiant detaliu şi, desigur, foarte multă proiectare. Caracterul Sensai constă în răspunsuri potrivite, echilibru şi poezie, frumuseţea spaţiului gol şi economia limbajului. [EN] The exhibition presented a particular way of relating to tradition, reflected by the current Japanese architecture. The continuity is not about the perpetuation of a “Japanese style”, but one could notice that Japanese architects are rather inclined to look for ideas, concepts, background at the bottom of traditional architecture, rather than typologies or models. Certain common categories were defined for participants, highlighting 3 selection types:
1. First-class architecture, with a selection mainly relying on the complexity of programmes and the development of the public space: Jun Aoki, Tetsuo Furuichi, Waro Kishi, Kazuhiro Kojima, Kengo Kuma, Hiroshi Naito, Sanaa and Taira Nishizawa.
2. A second selection is rather focused on the housing, the small functions and the search for alternatives: Ryuichi Ashizawa, Sou Fujimoto, Masahiro & Mao Harada, Jun Igarashi, Kumiko Inui, Kazuyasu Kochi, Hironori Matsubara, Tetsuya Nakazono, Makoto Tanijiri and Kuniaki Takahashi.
3. Engineering structures – examples of mutations in the thinking of a construction, changes of thinking, beyond scale and programme: Kenji Nawa and Jun Sato.

[EN] The exhibition presented a particular way of relating to tradition, reflected by the current Japanese architecture. The continuity is not about the perpetuation of a “Japanese style”, but one could notice that Japanese architects are rather inclined to look for ideas, concepts, background at the bottom of traditional architecture, rather than typologies or models. Certain common categories were defined for participants, highlighting 3 selection types:
1. First-class architecture, with a selection mainly relying on the complexity of programmes and the development of the public space: Jun Aoki, Tetsuo Furuichi, Waro Kishi, Kazuhiro Kojima, Kengo Kuma, Hiroshi Naito, Sanaa and Taira Nishizawa.
2. A second selection is rather focused on the housing, the small functions and the search for alternatives: Ryuichi Ashizawa, Sou Fujimoto, Masahiro & Mao Harada, Jun Igarashi, Kumiko Inui, Kazuyasu Kochi, Hironori Matsubara, Tetsuya Nakazono, Makoto Tanijiri and Kuniaki Takahashi.
3. Engineering structures – examples of mutations in the thinking of a construction, changes of thinking, beyond scale and programme: Kenji Nawa and Jun Sato.

[RO] Expoziţia a prezentat un mod particular de raportare la tradiţie, reflectat de arhitectura japoneză actuală. Continuitatea nu constă în perpetuarea unui “stil japonez”, dar se poate observa că arhitecţii niponi sunt mai degrabă înclinaţi să caute idei, concepte, fundaluri aflate la baza arhitecturii tradiţionale, iar nu tipologii sau modele. Au fost definite categorii comune pentru cei prezentaţi în expoziţie, punând astfel în evidenţă 3 direcţii de selecţie:
1. Arhitectură de primă mărime, rezultând o selecţie bazată mai ales pe complexitatea programelor şi dezvoltarea spaţiului public: Jun Aoki, Tetsuo Furuichi, Waro Kishi, Kazuhiro Kojima, Kengo Kuma, Hiroshi Naito, Sanaa şi Taira Nishizawa.
2. O a doua selecţie se orientează mai degrabă către spaţiul locuirii, al micilor funcţiuni şi al căutărilor de alternative: Ryuichi Ashizawa, Sou Fujimoto, Masahiro & Mao Harada, Jun Igarashi, Kumiko Inui, Kazuyasu Kochi, Hironori Matsubara, Tetsuya Nakazono, Makoto Tanijiri şi Kuniaki Takahashi.
3. Structuri inginereşti - exemple de mutaţii în gândirea construcţiei, transformări ale unui mod de a gândi, ce trec dincolo de scară şi program: Kenji Nawa şi Jun Sato.

Din punct de vedere pur vizual şi stilistic, arhitectura contemporană şi cea tradiţională par complet separate, dar această expoziţie pune în evidenţă tocmai felul în care spiritului poetic al arhiecturii japoneze se mută în altă perioadă de timp, în altă paradigmă culturală şi tehnologică, cea a prezentului.
